In this vibrant environment, you’ll encounter challenges that will test your resilience, moments of triumph that will boost your confidence, and friendships that will become the cornerstone of your support network and will last the test of time. So, buckle up and get ready to embark on an adventure of a lifetime that will shape you as a person, help you to explore new perspectives, broaden your horizons, and make memories that will stay with you forever.

I started college in the year 2020 which is the “pandemic year” and the duration of my course was from 2020-2023(i.e. 3 years). So, unfortunately, I couldn’t spend one and a half years of my college life on campus. But over the next 1.5 years, I got the chance to experience the most coveted college adventure.

Among these, the most popular ones, in terms of number of students, best faculty, and event organization, are SOET, SOLB, SOBE, SOMS & SOLJ.

The university also has 15 different student-led clubs catering to diverse passions. This is a big opportunity for students to nurture their passion alongside their studies and to learn teamwork and built leadership skills.

First-year and 3rd-semester journey:

As I mentioned earlier, I started during the pandemic, so our classes were online. In the first semester, we had Computer Fundamentals, Mathematics, Environmental Science, C Programming, and English Communication. Since I was a science student in 10+2, with subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and COMA, I easily passed the first semester and scored above 9 SGPA.

In the 2nd semester, we studied Data Structures, Mathematics, Web Designing, Design of Logic Circuits, and Digital Electronics. Among these subjects, Data Structures and Digital Electronics were new to me.

In the 3rd semester, we delved into all-important core subjects like JAVA, PYTHON, DBMS & Computer Organization, and Architecture.

Subject teacher experience:

  • The faculty for Data Structure was horrible. Most of the class time was wasted on checking the microphone. There were instances of excessive background noise, low volume, and poorly visible screen sharing due to bad network connections. Moreover, the teacher would frequently ask “Am I audible/Understood?” which became quite irritating. He didn’t even give us time to switch on the microphone before answering his questions, and he removed students from the class immediately after questioning. All this chaos led to my loss of interest in Data Structure, and I didn’t practice anything.
  • Unfortunately, the same faculty was assigned to teach JAVA, and I ended up learning nothing.
  • PYTHON was taught in a more theoretical aspect, leaving me weak practically.
  • On the other hand, the rest of the faculty were all good. They made us practice different topics through assignments, class tests, and quizzes. They even solved all our doubts through extra classes or personally after regular class hours.

4th semester and 3rd year journey :

By this time, the lockdown was over, and we started attending offline classes. Initially, we spent most of our time interacting with our classmates whom we had only seen during online classes and video calls, along with department faculties and some seniors and juniors. Exploring the campus and participating in various activities organized by clubs also brought us great enjoyment.

Now, coming back to studies. In the 4th semester, we were taught Algorithm Design, Operating System, Computer Graphics, Computer Network and an additional subject named Human Values and Ethics.

Subject teacher experience:

  • I must admit that our algorithm design faculty was one of the best. Thanks to him, I gained proficiency in DSA and DBMS. He guided each one of us from a placement and job perspective, encouraging many of us to start working on projects and master programming languages like JAVA and PYTHON, according to our preferences.
  • However, my experience with computer graphics was not that good.

After the end of the 4th semester, we finally reached our final year, and it was time to prepare for placements as companies started visiting the campus from the beginning of the 6th semester.

In the 5th semester, we had subjects like Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Business Communication, Project-I, Financial Accounting and lastly Management Information System. Students who enrolled for the on-campus placement drive received training in Aptitude, Soft skills, and technical areas, and we were exempted from regular classes to focus on the training programs and internships.

In our last semester, we had three subjects to cover: Cyber Security, Project II, Comprehensive VIVA, E-commerce, and Applications.

Faculty experience:

Every faculty member during my final year was very supportive and helpful. They shared valuable tips and experiences that greatly aided us in our placement preparation.

Placement:

During my time, around 25 companies visited for the CSE department, and BCA students were eligible to participate. Most of these companies were startups or small firms based in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, or Delhi, with a few big reputed firms also present. These companies offered both technical and non-technical jobs to students, with an average package of INR 3.5 LPA. The placement cell was active and helped students prepare for interviews.

Drawback: The placement cell would block you from their job search portal if you received a single offer letter from some on-campus company (regardless of whether you accepted it or not), making you ineligible to sit for other companies.

My mistakes:

  • As exams were conducted online, I didn’t pay much attention to building a strong fundamental knowledge and only focused on passing the VIVA exams.
  • I didn’t interact much with seniors on time, and by the time I realized the importance of their experiences and advice for placements, the placement season was knocking on my doors.
  • Didn’t practice coding every day.
  • I didn’t practice coding consistently every day, which left me weak in core subjects, languages, and DSA until the last day of my second year.
  • I lacked good projects on my resume except for the final year one.

Learnings from my mistakes:

  • Interact with your seniors, build connections, and learn from their experiences on campus. Seek their advice on academic achievements and know which faculty members are approachable for help. Establish a strong relationship to potentially gain referrals in the job market.
  • Create a LinkedIn profile and start connecting with your super seniors. Seek guidance from those who are placed in your dream company, as they can provide insights into the current job market and help you make informed decisions.
  • Be active on LinkedIn and showcase your achievements and skills to serve as a digital resume for job applications.
  • Start working on projects from your very first semester to showcase your skills effectively.
  • If interested in internships or research papers, talk to your teachers, as they can offer opportunities.
  • Focus on improving aptitude skills
  • PRO TIP ** Start practicing Data Structure and Algorithm (DSA) on different online platforms, learn the concepts of Operating System, Computer Network, Database Management System (DBMS), and Software Engineering, and have a very strong command over any language from day 1.**
  • Use your 3rd year to practice aptitude, soft skills, revise crucial subjects, engage in internships, and work on the final year project to increase your chances of getting good placements.

EVENTS :

The campus hosts various events, including the annual fest “ADINOVA” and the tech-fest “SYGNIFIA” organized by the department of SOET. Other celebrations like Holi, Christmas, Agamoni, etc., add to the excitement. Participate in different competitions, seminars, and Yoga sessions throughout the year to enhance personal grooming.
