GATE Exam Experience for CSE

I want to share my experience preparing for the GATE exam, hoping it might help others in similar situations. I am from the Computer Science Engineering (CSE) department at a university. My preparation journey had unique challenges, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

My Journey:

In my second and third years, classes were disrupted due to the pandemic, and we only returned to campus in the fourth year. I began my GATE preparation in my final year, balancing it with campus placements and project work (both mini and main projects). Given the time constraints, I focused on the core subjects with higher weightage.

I started preparing early each morning, often at 4 AM. Initially, I found it difficult because I lacked a strong foundation in core subjects. However, I was determined to pursue my MTech at an NIT or IIT, so I pushed myself hard.

Engineering

Despite my efforts, I didn’t qualify for GATE. Looking back, I realize that my approach had some critical flaws.

Mistakes I Made:

Focusing Too Much on Theory: I concentrated mostly on theoretical aspects and tried to memorize formulas without understanding their applications.

Lack of Problem-Solving Practice: For EEE, problem-solving skills are crucial, but I didn’t practice enough problems.

Insufficient Mock Tests: I took only a few mock tests, which left me feeling tense and unprepared during the actual exam.

Tips for Future Aspirants

Start Early: Begin your preparation as early as possible. Whether you are in your second, third, or fourth year, start today. Daily improvement adds up over time.

Make Short Notes and Key Points: While studying, create short notes and highlight key points. Regularly revise these notes to reinforce your understanding.

Focus on Problem-Solving: Practice as many problems as you can. Understanding how to apply formulas in different scenarios is more important than memorizing them.

Don’t Worry About Coaching: Don’t feel discouraged if others are taking coaching classes. I didn’t take any coaching and still managed to learn a lot. Confidence and self-discipline are key.

Take Mock Tests Seriously: Regularly take mock tests to familiarize yourself with the exam pattern and to reduce anxiety on the actual exam day.

Stay Confident and Positive: Believe in yourself and your abilities. Consistent effort and a positive mindset can overcome many obstacles.

All The Best!!
