Indian Airways: An Introduction

- Indian ranks ninth in the world in the civil aviation market.

Development of Airways:
- The humble beginnings of the aviation sector began in 1911 when airmail operations began between Allahabad and Naini.
British, French, and Dutch were pioneers of established aviation in India between 1920 and 1930.
- Indian National Airways was founded in 1933. By the end of World War II, all major cities were connected with air services.
After independence, many companies entered the aviation industry and changed the face of the entire aviation industry.
- In 1953, Indian Airlines Corporation was formed for domestic airline services. Air India International was established in the same year for international flights.
- Vayudoot was founded in 1981 to increase air traffic in the country.
- Pawan Hans Limited was formed in 1985. It provides helicopter services to the oil industry including ONGC, Oil India Ltd., and Enron Oil and Gas, Mumbai High, connecting remote and inaccessible areas.
- The International Airports Authority of India and the National Airports Authority merged on April 1, 1995, to form the Airports Authority of India (AAI). This authority is responsible for providing safe and efficient air traffic services and aeronautical communication services for the effective control of air traffic in Indian airspace.
- Today, many private companies such as Spice Jet, Indigo, and Jet Airways have entered the aviation sector by offering quality services to passengers.
- The Department of Civil Aviation is the node ministry that oversees the aviation sector in India.
