JEE and MHT-CET Preparation Experience During the Pandemic

The journey of preparing for competitive exams is often filled with anticipation, anxiety, and determination. My story revolves around the intense preparation and unique challenges I faced while simultaneously gearing up for two significant exams: JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and MHT-CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test). Complicating matters, this journey took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, adding an extra layer of complexity to an already demanding process.

THE CHALLENGE BEGINS

It was my final year of high school, and like many of my peers, I was preparing for the engineering entrance exams. The two major exams on my radar were JEE and MHT-CET. Both exams were crucial for securing a seat in a prestigious engineering college, but they had different formats and required distinct preparation strategies. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic further complicated our preparation and added unprecedented challenges.

THE FORMAT OF THE EXAMS

JEE:

  • The JEE Main exam was notorious for its rigorous pattern, featuring multiple-choice questions across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • It included negative marking, which meant that incorrect answers would result in a deduction of marks, adding an extra layer of pressure.

MHT-CET:

  • The MHT-CET exam, on the other hand, was slightly more lenient, with multiple-choice questions in the same subjects but without the penalty of negative marking.
  • This allowed for a more aggressive approach in answering questions, reducing the fear of losing marks for incorrect attempts.

PREPARATION STRATEGIES

Balancing preparation for both exams required meticulous planning, especially with the disruptions caused by the pandemic. Schools and coaching centers shifted to online classes, and we had to adapt to new ways of learning.

JEE Preparation:

  • Emphasis on understanding concepts deeply and practicing high-level problems.
  • Regular mock tests to get accustomed to the negative marking scheme and to develop accuracy.
  • Study materials included JEE-specific books, online resources, and coaching class notes.
  • Online study groups and virtual doubt-solving sessions became essential.

MHT-CET Preparation:

  • Focus on speed and accuracy, given the lack of negative marking.
  • Solving a higher volume of questions to build confidence in attempting all questions.
  • Using state board textbooks as the primary resource, supplemented by additional practice papers.
  • Leveraging online resources for practice and concept clarity.

SUBJECTS TO FOCUS ON

For both exams, the subjects were the same, but the depth and approach varied:

Physics:

  • JEE: Focused on conceptual clarity and problem-solving techniques.
  • MHT-CET: Emphasized speed and application of concepts.

Chemistry:

  • JEE: Required understanding of complex theories and organic reactions.
  • MHT-CET: Relatively straightforward questions with an emphasis on factual knowledge.

Mathematics:

  • JEE: Included complex and multi-step problems.
  • MHT-CET: Focused on quick calculations and direct application of formulas.

DO’S AND DON’TS

Do’s:

  • Plan Strategically: Create a balanced study schedule that accommodates both exams.
  • Practice Regularly: Take mock tests for JEE and solve extensive practice papers for MHT-CET.
  • Stay Updated: Keep track of any changes in the exam patterns or syllabus.
  • Take Care of Yourself: Maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular breaks, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep.
  • Adapt to Online Learning: Make the most of online resources and virtual study sessions.

Don’ts:

  • Procrastinate: Avoid last-minute cramming; consistent study is key.
  • Ignore One Exam: Don’t neglect one exam in favor of the other; both are equally important.
  • Overstress: Manage stress through relaxation techniques and stay positive.
  • Let the Pandemic Disrupt Your Routine: Maintain a structured study schedule despite external uncertainties.

THE EXAM DAYS

The day of the JEE Main exam arrived first. The atmosphere at the exam center was tense, compounded by the strict COVID-19 protocols. Masks, sanitizers, and social distancing were mandatory, adding to the stress. I navigated through the questions carefully, mindful of the negative marking. Each question required precision and confidence.

A few weeks later, it was time for the MHT-CET exam. The lack of negative marking offered a slight relief, and I approached the exam with a more aggressive strategy, attempting all questions without the fear of penalty for wrong answers. The pandemic protocols were still in place, but I was better prepared to handle them this time.

REFLECTING ON THE EXPERIENCE

Both exams tested not only my academic knowledge but also my resilience and adaptability. The experience taught me the importance of strategic planning and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Balancing the preparation for two major exams during a pandemic was challenging, but it reinforced my determination and work ethic.
