Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (RIT) Chennai Campus Experience

Introduction

About Me: Hello, I’m Sr***m*n, a student from the 2020-2024 CSE batch at Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (RIT). I wanted to share my genuine thoughts about this college based on my personal experience. I assure you that this blog is completely unbiased and not meant to promote my college.

About RIT

Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (RIT) is an autonomous institution affiliated with Anna University. Established in 2008, RIT offers;-

  • B.E. Computer Science & Engineering
  • B.E. Computer Science & Engineering(AI&ML)
  • B.E. Computer & Communication Engineering
  • B.E. Electronics & Communication Engineering
  • B.E. Mechanical Engineering
  • B.Tech. Artificial Intelligence & Data Science
  • B.Tech. Computer Science and Business Systems
  • BE Electronic Engineering (VLSI)
  • BE Bio Technology

Academics (7/10):

The teachers are well-experienced, and many of them hold Ph.D. degrees. They are friendly and open to answering your doubts whenever you need help. However, it’s important to note that most professors focus on the syllabus and may not go beyond that. If you’re interested in advanced topics like technology, competitive coding, or artificial intelligence, you’ll need to dedicate your free time to learning them independently to stand out from the rest.

Regarding notes, RIT provides PDF format notes for reference. If you’re not satisfied with them, you can refer to lecture notes or access extra resources from the library.

there are five examinations to do before the semester exam starts: CAT 1, CAT 2, CAT 3, Model Exam, and Model Practical. CAT 1, CAT 2, and CAT 3,CAT exam duration would be 1 hour 30 mins (2 units). CAT 2(1 unit) will take place online. The best results from the three tests will be taken into account for your internal assessment

Tip: Regarding semester exams, you can easily pass and get good marks if you study the important questions and solve past 5-year question papers. That alone is sufficient

Campus life(8/10):

The campus at Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (RIT) has good infrastructure. The labs are equipped with internet and air conditioning(A.C). They have an Apple center with Apple computers. You’ll find a College Arcade for printing, photocopying, and stationery needs. The canteen serves good food, but Many times there might be long queues. The college library is spacious and well-maintained, giving you a comfortable place to study. The campus provides Jio Wi-Fi, and you’re allowed to use your mobile phones in college, except during lectures or exams.

Sports (5/10 ):

If you love sports, do not set high expectations for sports activities at this college. Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (RIT) focuses more on academics, but they organize 1-2 sporting events per year.

Cultural (7/10):

they organize a cultural every year which goes from 1-2 days.

Events (8/10):

They organize events every month, which may vary across departments. RIT invites industry leaders to deliver guest lectures,

Dress code(10/10):

Formal Shirts and pants for Boys and Girls should wear only Salwar with a long top and dupatta.

Clubs(7/10):

This College has many clubs like Technical, startup, cultural, podcast, Rotaract, etc. where students can participate in various events. Since I have not participated in any clubs, you can visit the RIT website to learn more about club activities on recent events.

College Working days and Attendance(8/10):

The college is open for students from Tuesday to Saturday, allowing a 5-day schedule. College has 75% attendance mandatory criteria to appear for semester exam.

Fees(4/10):

When I enrolled through TNEA Counseling in 2020, I got a seat in the B.E Computer Science and Engineering program at Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology. The fees for my program were 1.2 lakh per year.

for upcoming batches i.e. after 2023 you may expect fees to be more than 2 Lakhs /year for CSE/IT/AIDS/CSBS since it has more demand and 1-2 lakhs for other branches(via TNEA counseling). For a Management seat, fees would be more than TNEA counseling fees. (Note: Bus is included with fee and it is mandatory irrespective of your distance)

Note: In 2023 some students paid 5 LPA as a donation to get CSE seat via Managament.

for the Hostel, they charge 80,000rs/year.

miscellaneous fee: you would be paying an additional fee of 180+ Rs as a breakage fee every semester.

Note: all the figures mentioned may vary more or less it is advised to contact college management to get exact details

Placements(6/10) :

The college has a collaborative placement cell with Rajalakshmi Engineering College (Main Campus), offering various job offers categorized as ELITE (>10 LPA), SUPER DREAM(>8 LPA), DREAM(> 6LPA), and General(3.5LPA-4.5LPA). The college consistently maintains good placement records, with almost 90% of placements in technical branches. For core branches, you can visit the official website and their LinkedIn page.

But in our batch i.e 2020-2024 Placements was bad in this college because RIT & REC have the same placement cell. Only a few companies visit our college directly. In our batch, more than 40% of students in CSE got placed, I don’t know about ECE, CCE, and AIDS. For the present batch (admissions after 2023), a lot of branches have increased, such as AIML and CSBS ,You can expect heavy competition and number going down in placements . Ask the seniors of the college to know the placement conditions before taking admission. For the CSE 2020-2024 batch, only half of the students got placed. 10% of the companies that visited offered were call centers or non-tech jobs. It is risky since REC-RIT colleges are merged for placements.

Note: Most of the colleges show better percentages in their placement records for their promotion for next year Admissions. Don’t trust blindly the website and official social media numbers on placements of that college, Ask the Final year students of that college to know placement condition of the college.

RIT also offers Placement training sessions which will begin in your 3rd and 4th year for aptitude and technical practice.

My Advice based on Experience:

If you’re unsure about whether to join Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (RIT) or not, let’s make it simpler for you

  1. If you mainly want a degree and want to prepare for other Exams: it’s better to consider other colleges with lower fees. RIT’s fees are higher compared to some nearby colleges, so you can explore more affordable options.
  2. If you’re looking for a fun college experience with good placements: RIT is a great choice! The college has a relaxed atmosphere, allowing you to enjoy your time there. Plus, they provide good placement opportunities if you perform good at Coding and aptitude. You can have fun, make memories, and also secure good career prospects.

Note: In the end, consider what matters most to you – your goals, career aspirations, financial situation, and the kind of experience you want from college. This will help you make the right decision for yourself

Conclusion:

Good things: Lenient, friendly teachers; notes and study material facilities; placements: well-equipped labs; internet facility, library, mobiles are allowed, gender diversity (boys can interact with girls).

Bad things: No free time due to a hectic schedule (college timings are from 5:30 AM to 3:30 PM, It may take 2-3 hours extra for some long-distance students if there is heavy traffic), waiting in long queues for canteen food, high fees compared to other nearby colleges (bus fee is mandatory regardless of distance)

Transport:

RIT has 20+ buses and the majority of buses are equipped with Air conditioning. Which starts at 5 AM and you can search RIT Transport in your search engine to know more information about timings, bus stops, route details, etc.

My rating would be (7/10) in total.
