RTFD vs plain text vs rich text files?

The main difference between the RTFD, plain text and rich text files are:

  • Plain text (.txt): The most basic of the bunch – stores only raw characters, no formatting whatsoever. Universal and useful for configuration files or storing code.
  • Rich Text (.rtf): Enables basic formatting (bold, italics, underline, font changes) while remaining easily readable across different word processors.
  • RTFD (.rtfd): Enhanced rich text developed by Apple. It can include images, advanced formatting, and custom elements. Best for preserving complex layouts within Apple’s software, but compatibility may be limited outside their ecosystem.
