Why are Many Species of Animals and Birds Getting Extinct?

Hundreds of species of animals and birds have been identified as extinct worldwide for various reasons. These reasons are discussed below:

  • Habitat degradation and Habitat loss are the main causes of extinction. It occurs due to deforestation, and clearing of forests for settlement and agriculture purposes.
  • Climate change alters habitats and food sources which makes species survival difficult by putting stress on ecologically adapted species.
  • Pollutants such as pesticides and plastics negatively impact wildlife.
  • Illegal hunting-killing through hunting, fishing and trade reduces the number of species. But invasive species can also wreak havoc on ecosystems, either by eating or competing with natives.
  • Disease Outbreaks: Infectious diseases, particularly those introduced by humans or other animals, can spread rapidly among vulnerable species populations. This leads to mass die-offs and extinctions.
  • Loss of Genetic Diversity: Small population sizes and fragmented habitats can reduce genetic diversity within species, making them more susceptible to environmental changes and less able to adapt to new conditions.
  • Human Activities: Activities such as urbanization, industrialization, and infrastructure development can directly destroy habitats, fragment landscapes, and disturb ecosystems, leading to declines in species populations and eventual extinctions.
