Banaras Hindu University Campus Experience

I was a student of the Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University for the session 2020-23. I was enrolled in the program of Bachelor of Science with mathematics major. I passed my 12th under the Assam state board (known as AHSEC) in the year 2020 with 88.4 % and checking the NIRF ranking of top universities I decided to join Banaras Hindu University. I was a Science enthusiast from childhood and had no knack towards, the most sought-after two fields in India, Engineering and Medical whatsoever. So I did not even fill out the forms of JEE or NEET and directly applied for the BHU entrance exam, in my time there was no CUET, BHU used to conduct its own exams. As I was interested in mathematics, I also applied to ISI and IISER.

The year 2020 was a whole roller coaster of emotions, right after my board exams COVID-19 pandemic hit. We were anxious about future and I could not do any serious study in the lockdown period. Eventually, in the month of September, BHU conducted its exam. It went very well for me provided my preparation. Soon after, counselling began in the month of November, and classes began in online mode in the first week of December. We were so eager for the lockdown to end and explore BHU.

Banaras Hindu University is one of the oldest and topmost universities of India. It is also the largest residential university in Asia. After the pandemic, after spending three semester online, finally our campus reopened in the month of February 2022, for offline classes. We got to meet the friends we talked with Whatsapp groups and calls. It was a wonderful experience to roam around the campus in Spring. We spent lot of time exploring our big campus, ate Samosa Kachori near Vishwanath Temple, visited Ghats late at night. Banaras offered an eternal peace to my mind and I was always filled with a sense of gratification. After campus reopening, we explored the holy city of Banaras, it was also enchanting experience, we made unforgettable memories together.

The exams in BHU were very relaxed, there were gaps between exams. The questions were mostly from PYQs, I passed exams with above average grades without breaking a sweat. Since we got to our campus at an awkward time, there was not much fests organized at the Institute of Science. Although we used to take part in the fest organized by IIT BHU, Kashiyatra and Elixir, which was organized by IMS, BHU.

I spent one and a half year in the campus, but it was totally worth it. I made friends for life there and also got to learn about life. I am forever grateful to have chosen this university at the first place. Soon in May 2023, our final semester exams were over, it was time to say goodbye to my beloved university. There was no culture of placements in our institute, at least not at the bachelors level. Most of my friends went to IIT for higher studies, I am now in IISER Mohali as an integrated PhD in mathematics.
