Gate Exam Experience

I am Ajay Joshi a computer engineering student currently in my 4th semester, my journey with the GATE examination began rather unexpectedly. In my first year, I was not aware of the benefits of the GATE exam. In my second year, I got information about GATE and its benefits.

Initially, I found myself in a dilemma: whether to opt for an online course for GATE preparation or not. I heard the misconception that preparing for both GATE and placements simultaneously was impossible, which only added to my confusion. Unsure of what to prioritize—GATE or placements—I decided to not to take any formal coaching for the GATE.

Despite performing well in my 12th-grade exams, my knowledge in the field of computer science was limited. This made it even more challenging to decide between GATE and placements. After I had done some research online and discussions with peers, I concluded that preparing for both is feasible. Moreover, GATE preparation provides a strong foundation in core subjects, and will also help in campus written tests for placement.

Balancing GATE and placement preparation wasn’t as hard as it seemed. By allocating time to both every day and viewing the process as an enjoyable journey rather than a burden, I found myself staying motivated. I embarked on my preparation without any coaching, relying on free resources like YouTube channels, online articles (such as those on w3wiki), and reference books from my college library.

Initially, I was in full Josh and then the downfall started I was not able to solve many questions although they were not very hard. it disappointed me then I stopped preparing for the gate and thought it was better to only prepare for placement and focus in competitive programming and doing projects.

However, my fascination with the GATE exam resurfaced, prompting me to resume my journey. This time, I approached it with renewed determination, armed with the lessons learned from my earlier setbacks. Now I will give my first attempt in 2025.

Why You Should Consider GATE

I highly recommend all engineering students to consider taking the GATE exam, as it offers many benefits. Even if you don’t get into an IIT for your B.TECH, you can still join IIT through GATE. Moreover, it’s easier to secure admission into an IIT through GATE than through JEE. Additionally, qualifying GATE and pursuing a master’s degree can also provide you with a stipend. GATE opens doors to various government jobs in the engineering field, including opportunities in PSUs. From my perspective, every engineering student should give the GATE exam a shot. While opting for a GATE course is beneficial if affordable, it’s still possible to achieve a 2 or 3 digit rank without it. So, start preparing!
