IIT Kanpur Admission Experience for MSc Mathematics
About MSc Mathematics at IITK:
The Department of Maths and Stats, IITK offers a 2 year master’s degree in mathematics, called the MSc Mathematics. Students for this program are selected through the IIT JAM MA examination. The program offers a wide range of courses in pure and applied mathematics, with a lots of electives to choose from in the last two semesters of the program.
Counseling:
After the results of the IIT JAM were announced, the counseling is done through the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) portal. I had score an all India rank of 200 and hence, was confident of getting a seat in IIT Kanpur. Earlier I was a bit confused in choosing a institute but after reviewing the faculty profiles and the curriculum of IITK, I decided to put this as my first preference. As expected, I got a seat here in the first round itself. I paid the seat confirmation fees and my seat allotment process was completed.
After Counseling:
After the counseling process was over, I received an official mail from the IITK. I was given my iitk mail id and steps to complete the account creation process. Over a course of few days, I received mails for instructions on how to create the pingala account and the list of documents needed to be uploaded on the pingala portal. Aftet the document upload, the remaining fees was to be paid.
I also received a whatsapp group link in my mail that was created by a PG student guide. Basically, to guide new comers, old PG students are appointed as guides to a batch of 15-20 students to clear their doubts and to make them familiar with the campus, rules and regulations and also to help them settle here.
Reporting:
On July 21, 2023, I was asked to report to the campus. That day, hostel rooms were alloted and the orientation week began. Only table and chair were provided to us in the room. We had to get our own mattress and other necessary items. In that week, various seminars and orientation programs were held to make us familiar about how things in IITK work. We were also given a campus tour by our student guides. These seniors tried their best to tell us everything they knew about the campus in the limited time they had. Some of the student guides also treated their juniors with tea/coffee and snacks.
Meetings with the department cordinators were also held. They told us about the curriculum in detail and also about the grading policies. In the same week, our identity cards, health cards were issued. Link to setup our wifi password was also given.
Class Commencement:
On July 31, 2023, the classes commenced as per schedule. The schedule and everything academic/ non-academic is available on the pingala portal. Even to register complaints, one has to use the pingala portal for immediate actions.
Conclusion:
Even though the counseling process seems confusing in the brochure, it is quite simple. In case of any doubt, just contact your student guide. They too went through the whole process just a year or two ago and hence, know the solution to any problem that you have.
