A Distributed Database Management System(DDBMS) can be defined as a system which controls the storage and retrieval of data among multiple interconnected small databases(nodes). This system is popular in modern data management because of it’s transparency and efficient data sharing mechanism within a distributed environment.

Q2: Write the types of DDBMS?

Answer:

Distributed Database Management System(DDBMS) can be divided in six types which are–> Homogeneous, Heterogeneous, Federated, Replicated, Partitioned and Hybrid DDBMS where the hybrid DDBMS is the combination of previous five types of DDBMS based on requirements and conditions.

Q3: Write the main difference between Replicated and Partitioned DDBMS?

Answer:

For Replicated DDBMS, multiple copies of same data fragments are stored and managed across different sites which provides improved availability and performance. In the other hand, for Partitioned DDBMS, the whole database is partitioned into distinct blocks and assigned for different sites.

Answer:

In a Federated DDBMS system, all of it’s users can access and query data from multiple distributed databases which are the participants of a single logical database. Federated DDBMS maintains local autonomy and controls over individual sites.

Answer:

In Heterogeneous DDBMS, the participating databases may contain different DBMS software, data modelling and query languages across multiple sites. For this reason managing data representation, translation and query processing may be time consuming and not easy yet.

Answer:

Selecting a DDBMS is a crucial work for business purposes. This selection may depend upon various conditions such as data distribution requirements and availability needs, site autonomy, scalability and performance, the level of heterogeneity in the system etc.

A system that is used for managing the storage and retrieval of data across multiple interconnected databases is called a Distributed Database Management System(DDBMS). In this case, the interconnected databases are situated in different geographical areas. In DDBMS, one can access and store data transparently from different geographical locations and ensure high availability, scalability, and fault tolerance mechanisms. DDBMSs are designed to handle huge amounts of data spread across different sites. It can give seamless performance in data sharing and collaboration by organizations.
