History of SWAT

Several major events that proved the need for specialized groups that could perform particular law enforcement duties more efficiently had an impact on the creation of SWAT teams. In response to situations such as 1965’s Watts Riots, The University of Texas Tower Shooting in 1966, The Newhall Incident in 1970 and many more , the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) created the first SWAT team in 1967. Initially, the team consisted of a limited number of cops with tactical abilities and shooting skills, the LAPD SWAT team was formed.
