History of Valentine’s day

Valentine’s day is celebrated on 14th February every year. It has very ancient history and is associated with ancient Roman traditions and Christian martyrdom. One popular story is associated with Saint Valentine.

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend associated with Valentine’s Day was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men.

Saint Valentine was martyred because he supported the freedom of Christians from a Roman jail. After being arrested, he was sentenced to death. Saint Valentine finally meets Julia and falls in love; the story ends. This is the most popular story behind celebration of Valentine’s Day.
