Impact of Force on Motion

Force can cause the following impact on motion

  • It can change state of rest to motion
  • It can change state of motion to rest
  • It can increase and decrease the speed of body
  • It can change the direction of motion

Mathematically we can the impact of force on motion by using second law of motion. According to Newton’s second law of motion force is equal to rate of change of momentum of object.

So let us derive it.

Let p is the momentum and t is time.

So by Newton’s second law of motion

F = dp/dt

Now momentum p = mv,

F = d(mv)/dt = mdv/dt {As m is mass which is constant}

dv/dt = a = acceleration

Here, we can see that force is causing change in motion.

Hence we F = ma

  • Hence, Force cause change in motion of object
  • So acceleration of on object is directly proportional to force applied on it and is inversely proportional of mass.
  • The direction of force determines the direction of acceleration of object. If direction of force and acceleration are in same direction then speed of object increases and if force and acceleration are in opposite direction then speed of object decreases.
