Largest District of Kerala
Idukki is the largest district of Kerala. It is the largest in all fourteen districts of Kerala. It holds this title after a recent government order expanded its land area and it has surpassed the land area of Palakkad which was the largest district before govt orders. Idukki has a total land area of 4,612 square kilometres (1,781 sq mi). Its headquarters is Painavu. Key features of the Idukki district is that it has hilly terrain, wildlife sanctuaries, cardamom plantations, and hydroelectric projects. It has a total population of 11,28,000 according to the 2011 census.
Idukki has landscapes and diverse wildlife. Its literacy rate is below the state average and ranks 12th among Kerala’s districts. In the 2011 census, the district recorded a literacy rate of 91 percent in which the male literacy of 94 percent exceeds the female literacy of 89 per cent. There are new projects taking place in Idukki which will shape the future of the district and the state. Some of the projects are the Hydropower expansion, upgrading existing dams and constructing new ones to meet energy demands. Spice and agriculture development that will support farmers and promote organic farming practices.
