Major Problems In Punjab – Then and Now
In today’s context, Punjab is still fighting with some of the major issues mentioned above. Here are some of the past poblems related to Punjab as mentioned below.
- Emеrgencе of Extremism – After the creation of the independent Punjab state, the Akalis shifted their ideology to extremism. This problem is still happening in the Punjab. So many armed insurgencies took place at that time and Golden Temple became the fortress of those extremists.
- Operation Blue Star – When the extremists captured the Golden Temple in June 1984, the Government of India took military action to flush these extremists out from the Golden Temple. It was a successful mission but it caused so much damage to the Golden Temple. This hurt the whole Sikh community as they believed the government attacked their faith.
- Assassination of former Prime Minister Smt.Indira Gandhi – On 31st October 1984, former Prime Minister Smt.Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh guards. It was a bad consequence of Operation Blue Star. After this, a considerable amount of sikh support went towards the militant groups and extremists. On the other hand, the congress supporters started violent riots all over India to kill sikh people which was not acceptable at all.
- Road to Peace – After the assassination of former Prime Minister Smt.Indira Gandhi, his son Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India. Gandhi took so many progressive steps like the rеconciliation efforts and most importantly Rajiv Gandhi – Longowal Accord. They signed an agreement to transfer the power of Chandigarh and the Indian Government withdrew the Armеd Forcеs Spеcial Powеrs Act from Punjab.
After being a separate state, Punjab faced so many internal issues related to extremism, drug problems, arms black marketing, the khalistani problem, Operation Blue Star, Indira Gandhi’s assassination, the Punjab Accord, and so on.
