The government’s response caused chaos, leading to a coup. The Tuaregs then took over northern cities, declaring Azawad as a separate, unrecognized country. But internal disagreements among supporting Islamic groups, linked to Al Qaeda Maghreb, sparked infighting. The Islamic rebels gained control, imposing strict Sharia law.
