  • The Triassic Period, a geological timeframe for dating Earth’s events.
  • The period began 251.9 MYA after the Permian Period.
  • It concluded 201.3 MYA with the onset of the Jurassic Period.
  • The period prolonged approximately 50.6 million years.
  • Triassic period is named after the distinctive ‘Trias’ rock layers in north-western Europe.
  • The Triassic is renowned for the emergence of dinosaurs and the appearance of the first true mammals.

  • In this period, the red sandstones formed before the breakup of Pangea and can be found today in regions like North America and Africa, hosting rich Triassic fossils.

The Jurassic Period

(From 201 Mya to 145 Mya)

  • The Jurassic Period was named after the Jura Mountain range, present in France Switzerland border.
  • The period began around 201.3 MYA and ended around 145 MYA.
  • It lasted 56 million years.
  • It was the second longest period.
  • Pangea broke into Laurasia in the north and Gondwana in the south in this period.
  • The period followed a mass extinction that allowed dinosaurs to dominate the land
  • Particularly sauropods like Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus, dominated this period.

  • The appearance of the first true birds was observed during the late Jurassic period.
  • The period also marked the introduction of lizards and butterflies to the evolving Earth.

The Cretaceous Period

(From 145 Mya to 66 Mya)

  • The Cretaceous Period spanned 145 million to 66 MYA.
  • The period lasts for 79 million years.
  • It was the longest epoch in the Mesozoic Era.
  • It marked the third and final period in the Mesozoic Era which preceded the Paleogene Period.
  • Laurasia and Gondwana continued to drift apart during this period to configure the modern landscape of the continents by the end of this period.
  • The “Cretaceous” name came from the Latin word “creta”. It means the chalk layer formed in this period in Western Europe.
  • Flowering plants like grasses, figs, planes, and magnolias were first seen in this period.
