Round 1: Screening Round

On October 10, 2023, I received a call from an unknown number. Normally, I do not answer such calls, but for some reason, I decided to pick up. It was a Google recruiter informing me that my application had been reviewed and they wanted to proceed with my candidacy. I was asked if I had a few minutes to discuss about myself, marking the beginning of my screening round.

I had heard from friends and read rumours that some candidates were rejected in this initial round, so I did not take it lightly. During the 20 to 30 minutes voice call, I introduced myself and discussed my achievements, internship experiences, and projects. Satisfied with my responses, the recruiter briefed me on the upcoming rounds, procedures, and other necessary details. He inquired about my availability for the technical interview, but as my fourth semester End exams were ongoing, I explained my situation transparently. He requested my exam dates, which I shared on the same day.

I had read on w3wiki that some students who requested rescheduling their interviews never heard back from Google. When I did not hear from the recruitment team for the next two weeks, I feared I had lost my opportunity.

I am sharing my experience applying for the Application Engineering Summer Internship at Google for 2024. Although it has been roughly six months since my interview, I initially hesitated to share my story as I was not selected, and people often prefer success stories. However, I recently read a book that beautifully described how our best teacher is our last mistake. Therefore, I decided to share my interview experience to help others learn from my mistakes.
