Setting Up GlusterFS on Ubuntu

Step 1: Install GlusterFS Packages

Start by updating your Ubuntu server’s package index:

sudo apt update

Then, install the GlusterFS server package:

sudo apt install glusterfs-server

Step 2: Make sure each server can recognize the others by their hostnames. You can do this by adding entries to the /etc/hosts file or setting up a DNS server.

Step 3: Create a Trusted Storage Pool

Pick one server to be the “master.” On this server, run this command to create a trusted storage pool:

sudo gluster peer probe <hostname or IP of the second server>

Repeat this step for each additional server you want to add.

Step 4: After setting up the trusted storage pool, you can create a GlusterFS volume to represent the combined storage space of all servers.

sudo gluster volume create <volume name> replica <num replicas> <hostname or IP of server>:/<brick path> ...

Replace <volume name> with your chosen name, <num replicas> with the number of replicas you want for data redundancy, and <hostname or IP of server>:/<brick path> with the server’s hostname or IP address and its brick path.

Step 5: Once the volume is created, start it with:

sudo gluster volume start <volume name>
