Steps to Clean a Computer
1. Get the Latest Updates
Windows
Open Settings
- Click the Start menu, then the gear icon.
Update & Security
- Select Update & Security.
Check for Updates
- If updates are available, click Install now.
- If not, click Check for updates and follow instructions.
- Remember to save your work before restarting if prompted.
macOS
Open System Preferences
- Click the Apple menu, then System Preferences.
Software Update
- Click Software Update.
Install Updates
- Click Update Now if updates are available.
- Click Upgrade Now for a newer macOS version.

Storage Sense: Storage Sense ensures that unnecessary files, such as deleted files in the Recycle Bin, old backups, and old update installers, are automatically deleted when your hard drive space is running low. To enable Storage Sense, open the Start menu, click on Settings, then select System, and click on Storage. If Storage Sense isn’t enabled, you can switch it on now.
macOS: To find out how much storage is available, click the Apple menu, select “About This Mac,” and then click “Storage.” Click the “Manage” button to view a detailed breakdown of your storage usage.Make sure you have at least 20% of your hard drive free at all times to help ensure that the computer can function at its highest levels.
3. Clear Web Browsing Data

4. Check for viruses and other malware

- If you have a Mac, there’s no built-in option to run a malware scan without installing a third-party app. Both Mac and Windows users can download a simple yet powerful malware scanner called Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes is free for scanning purposes, but if you want ongoing protection, you’ll need to pay for an upgrade. After downloading the software, open it and click “Scan Now” to find any malicious files. If Malwarebytes finds any, it will automatically quarantine those files to prevent them from harming your computer.
5. Remove Programs you don’t Use.

- Open the Start menu.
- Click on Settings (gear icon).
- Go to Apps.
- Find the program you want to remove, click it, and select Uninstall.
macOS
- Open Finder.
- Click on Applications.
- Drag the app to the Trash, or use the app’s uninstaller if it has one.

- Right-click on programs you don’t need and select Disable.
Open Settings

Reset This PC
- Under Reset this PC, click Get started.
- Choose to keep your files or remove everything.
Refreshing macOS

Boot into macOS Recovery
- Restart your Mac and hold Command + R until you see the Apple logo.
Reinstall macOS
- Select Reinstall macOS and follow the instructions.:
