The Prime Minister and Government
As the primary public “face” of His Majesty’s Government, the prime minister sets the policy agenda and priorities and typically coordinates the actions of the Cabinet and government ministries. All policy and decision-making ultimately rests with the prime minister.
Powers and Responsibilities of the Prime Minister
The prime minister has the authority to override individual ministries’ policy choices. Home Secretary Priti Patel was reportedly overruled by Boris Johnson on border closures, Scottish Secretary Donald Dewar was overruled by Tony Blair on abortion rights devolution to Scotland, Chancellor Alistair Darling was overruled by Gordon Brown on VAT rates, and Home Secretary Leon Brittan was overruled by Margaret Thatcher on Ian Brady and Myra Hindley’s parole.
Cabinet Formation and Function
The top selection-making frame of His Majesty’s government is the UK’s cabinet. Country secretaries and different senior ministers are some of the participants of this Privy Council committee, which the high minister chairs. The prime Minister appoints members of the cabinet, who are customarily selected from the residence of Commons and the house of Lords, the United Kingdom’s homes of Parliament.
Political System of United Kingdom
The UK political system is a constitutional monarchy, in which a unitary parliamentary democracy is granted government authority via laws and social norms. From this, the UK’s elected head of government is Rishi Sunak, who has been Prime Minister since 2022, while the United States of America’s hereditary king, Charles III, acts as head of the country.
