BBD NIITM Fest Experience – FOSS Lucknow Meetup

Introduction

On May 11, 2024, the FOSS United Lucknow Meetup brought together tech enthusiasts, developers, and open-source activists at BBD NIITM in Lucknow for a day of education, teamwork, and community development. From engaging speaker sessions to hands-on workshops, the event celebrated everything open source, providing guests with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to delve deeply into the world of free and open-source software.

A brief overview of FOSS United

FOSS United is a non-profit foundation that aims at promoting & strengthening the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) ecosystem in India. It is a dynamic, community-driven platform dedicated to open-source software development and collaboration.

How the event started

The FOSS United Lucknow Meetup event started with a lot of excitement as people arrived at BBD University. I was there as a videography volunteer, eager to capture the day’s activities. Right from the beginning, you could feel everyone was happy to be there and ready to learn and share.

The event began with some talks to welcome everyone. People were curious and excited, listening intently to the speakers. It was cool to see everyone coming together with the same goal – to learn about open source and how to be a part of it.

The Speaker Sessions

One of the highlights of the FOSS United Lucknow Meetup event was the lineup of interactive speaker sessions, in which industry leaders and seasoned engineers offered their thoughts, experiences, and best practices in the open source space. Each session provided attendees with useful insights and actionable takeaways, ranging from studying the newest trends in open-source technologies to discussing the significance of community-driven cooperation. The speakers included Mritunjay Sharma, Vishal Arya, Priyanshi Rai and Venkatesh Chaturvedi. The topics discussed in the event were “Introduction to Foss”, “strengthening India’s Foss Community”, “All about Containers”, etc.

Attendees got the opportunity to interact directly with the presenters, asking questions, sharing their own experiences, and connecting with other enthusiasts. The topics covered varied from open-source contribution tactics and project management practices to open source’s role in encouraging innovation and sustainability.

Experience as a volunteer

As a videography volunteer at the FOSS United Lucknow Meetup, I was able to capture the day’s dynamic energy and collaborative attitude. It was an incredible experience for me and I got to learn a lot throughout the event. After the event we got a chance to meet the learned speakers and have some productive discussions. It was a wonderful opportunity as I got to meet new people and make some new connections.
