Bird’s skeleton is pneumatic and fused in nature. They are very tender which is structurally strong to fly in a great altitude and pressure. They have fewer bones than mammals. The keel provides support to the wing muscles which provides an adequate flight power.

  • It works as a hinge with the support of the frontal and nasal bones.
  • They have cavities like air sacs to have maximum amount of oxygen in their body.
  • The air sacs push the air to the lungs and expell the stale air.
  • The skeletal structure is hollow and bones are simultaneously strong.
  • It helps them to overcome and balance the stress during the flight and landing.

Birds Skeletal System

The skeletal system of birds is unique and pneumatic. The scientific name for birds is Aves. They are warm-blooded vertebrates that belong to the Animalia kingdom. The Aves class can be divided further into two major categories Archaeornithes (Ancient Birds) and Neornithes (Modern Birds). The Archaeornithes are a set of extinct groups of birds that had a beak with teeth and a long lizard-like tail. On the other hand, Neornithes groups do not contain any teeth and have a short tail.
