Unique Features of Birds – Skeletal System

Here are some major features of the birds skeleton system as mentioned below:

  • The vertebral part of the bird’s backbone are fused. It provides the stability to have an efficient flight.
  • The skull and brain size of the birds is smaller compared to the other species. For this birds can fly so easily.
  • Birds have a unique respiratory system. Many of the bones of them are pneumatic. The air sacs are present in these bones and more efficient in exchanging gasses.
  • Modern birds do not have teeth and have only a beak. It makes their body more lightweight.
  • Birds have a fused collarbone. It provides a high flexibility to the bird’s neck to regulate the movement of the head.

Birds Skeletal System

The skeletal system of birds is unique and pneumatic. The scientific name for birds is Aves. They are warm-blooded vertebrates that belong to the Animalia kingdom. The Aves class can be divided further into two major categories Archaeornithes (Ancient Birds) and Neornithes (Modern Birds). The Archaeornithes are a set of extinct groups of birds that had a beak with teeth and a long lizard-like tail. On the other hand, Neornithes groups do not contain any teeth and have a short tail. Today, we will discuss the Skeletal structure of the birds in detail.

Skeletal System of Bird

Birds are vertebrate animals that have a lightweight string skeleton. It helps them to protect their internal organs as well as provides support to fly a long way. Birds have a spindle-shaped body. This specific body structure helps them to change direction while they are flying. This type of body structure reduces air resistance at the fly time. As compared to the mammals’ skeletal system, the bird’s skeletal structure is hollow and bones are simultaneously strong. It helps them to overcome and balance the stress during the flight and landing....
