Examples of Types of Fractions
Fractions represent parts of a whole and can be classified into various types based on their characteristics. Here are examples of different types of fractions:
- Proper Fractions: These are fractions where the numerator is smaller than the denominator, representing values less than 1.
- Examples: 1/2, 3/4, 5/8.
- Improper Fractions: These fractions have numerators that are equal to or greater than the denominators, representing values equal to or greater than 1.
- Examples: 5/3, 7/4, 11/6
- Mixed Fractions: Mixed fractions consist of a whole number and a proper fraction.
- Examples: [Tex]1\dfrac{1}{2}[/Tex], 2 \dfrac{3}{4}, 3 \dfrac{2}{5}.
- Unlike Fractions: Unlike fractions have different denominators.
- Examples: 1/3 and 2/5, 2/7 and 3/4, 3/8 and 5/6.
- Like Fractions: Like fractions have the same denominators.
- Examples: 2/5 and 3/5, 4/7 and 5/7, 1/3 and 2/3.
- Equivalent Fractions: Equivalent fractions represent the same portion of a whole but have different numerators and denominators.
- Examples: 1/2 and 2/4, 3/5 and 6/10, 2/3 and 4/6.
- Unit Fractions: Unit fractions have a numerator of 1.
- Examples: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4.
Types of Fractions
A fraction is a number in the form of a/b where a and b are whole numbers and b ≠ 0. There are different types of fractions in mathematics based on the numerators and denominators of any given fraction. There are primarily three types of fractions namely Proper Fractions, Improper Fractions, and Mixed Fractions. However, there are other types of fractions as well such as like and unlike fractions, unit fractions, and equivalent fractions. Hence in total, there are 7 kinds of fractions namely, Proper Fractions, Improper Fractions, Mixed Fractions, Like Fractions, Unlike Fraction, Unit Fractions, and Equivalent Fractions.
In this article, we will learn what are the different types of fractions in maths, examples of types of Fractions, and solve problems based on them.
