Isozymes Types
There are three types of isozymes which are listed below
- Tissue-specific isozymes: These isozymes are expressed in specific tissues or organs, performing functions tailored to the needs of that particular location. For example, LDH-5 is found predominantly in the liver.
- Developmental isozymes: Some isozymes are expressed during specific stages of development. This ensures that the biochemical processes are finely regulated as the organism grows.
- Inducible isozymes: These isozymes are produced in response to environmental factors or specific stimuli. Their expression can be induced by factors such as stress, toxins, or changes in nutrient availability.
Isozymes
Isozymes, also known as isoenzymes, are enzymes that differ in amino acid sequence but catalyze the same chemical reaction· They usually have different kinetic parameters or are regulated differently. Isozymes are often the result of gene duplication, but can also arise from polyploidization or nucleic acid hybridization. They allow the fine-tuning of metabolism to meet the particular needs of a given tissue or developmental stage.
