Policies related to Wind Energy in India

Initially, the Government had the National Wind Power Policy, but subsequently, both the onshore and offshore wind policies were developed.

For offshore wind energy, India has a very vibrant policy that came up in October 2015, known as the National Offshore Wind Energy Policy framework. The objective is to develop offshore wind energy in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) along the Indian coastline.

A Solar-Wind Hybrid policy was issued in May 2018. The main objective of the policy is to provide a framework for the promotion of large grid-connected wind-solar photovoltaic (PV) hybrid systems for optimal and efficient utilization of wind and solar resources, transmission infrastructure, and land. The wind-solar PV hybrid systems will help in reducing the variability in renewable power generation and achieving better grid stability.

Jaisalmer Wind Park is the Largest Wind Farm of India. A wind farm or wind park is a collection of wind turbines used to generate electricity in one location. It is sometimes referred to as a wind power plant or station. A few turbines or several hundred wind turbines spanning a large region are examples of different sizes of wind farms. Private individuals, or a small group of homes or businesses, consume the electricity produced by wind farms. Wind farm expansions often benefit economically from quicker average wind speeds since they result in higher power generation from the wind turbine.

Shri Tulsi Tanti was known as the “Wind Man” of India, due to his pioneering and visionary contributions in the field of renewable energy in the early 2000s. In India, wind energy has been shown to be the most rapidly expanding renewable energy source. India has a large coastline, thus there are both onshore and offshore wind farms there. India has an installed power capacity of 41.666 GW for wind energy as of September 30, 2022. India’s economy may be greatly boosted and its electricity needs might be met by wind energy.

Conclusion

A windmill is a device that converts wind energy from its kinetic to mechanical form. The entire blade rotation of a windmill is always counterclockwise. The ability of India to produce wind energy has increased significantly in the last several years. As of August 31, 2023, the total installed wind power capacity was 44.089 gigawatts (GW), ranking it as the fourth largest installed wind power capacity worldwide. The northwest, western, and southern regions include the majority of the states with wind power potential. It is a wise decision for the government to install windmills to stimulate the economy of the country. Farmers and ranchers may benefit financially from wind energy, which also boosts regional economies....
