Types of Proper Noun
- People’s Names: This is the most common type of proper noun. It includes first names (like Sarah or Michael), last names (like Smith or Johnson), and titles when they’re part of a name (like Doctor Jones or Queen Elizabeth).
- Geographical Names: These are names given to specific places on Earth. They can include continents (like Africa), countries (like Brazil), states or provinces (like Texas or Ontario), cities (like Paris), oceans (like the Atlantic Ocean), rivers (like the Nile River), and mountains (like Mount Everest).
- Names of Days and Months: Days of the week (like Monday or Friday) and months of the year (like January or July) are also proper nouns. However, seasons (like summer or winter) are not usually considered proper nouns unless they’re part of a title or a specific event.
- Holidays and Festivals: Names of specific holidays and festivals are proper nouns too. This includes religious and cultural celebrations (like Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, or Ramadan).
- Organizations and Institutions: Names of specific schools, universities, companies, government bodies, and other organizations are proper nouns. Examples include Harvard University, the United Nations, and Microsoft.
- Brand Names: These are specific names given to products or services by companies. Apple, Nike, and Coca-Cola are all examples of brand names.
- Works of Art and Literature: Titles of books, movies, songs, paintings, and other creative works are proper nouns. Examples include “The Great Gatsby,” “Starry Night,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
- Historical Events and Periods: Specific events in history and historical periods are named with proper nouns. Examples include the Renaissance, the French Revolution, and World War II.
