YouTube Analytics: Watch Time and Audience Reports
Watch Time in YouTube Analytics is a crucial metric that measures the total amount of time viewers spend watching your videos. This metric goes beyond just counting views; it takes into account the duration of engagement, offering valuable insights into how captivating your content is for the audience.
YouTube Analytics gives information through Audience Reports, providing creators with valuable insights into the demographics, interests, and behaviors of their viewers. Let’s explore the key components of Audience Reports and understand how they empower content creators.
Watch time report
Watch time is the total minutes people have spent watching your videos. It’s an important number because YouTube thinks videos with more watch time are interesting, so it suggests them more often.
On the Watch Time report, you can check how many minutes your videos have been watched. You can even see which videos people watch the most and organize them by topics, looks, and lengths to figure out what types of videos your viewers like the most.
To find Watch Time in YouTube Studio, go to Analytics, then Overview, and finally, click on Watch Time. It’s like checking how long your audience enjoys your videos.
Audience retention report
Audience retention tells you the percentage of viewers who watch and leave your video at different moments. YouTube likes videos with high audience retention because they keep people watching.
To find the Audience retention report in YouTube Studio,
Step 1: Click on the Step 2Content Tab, then Choose any video and click on its analytic icon.
Step 2: Go to Analytics Retention then Click on Engagement and Select Audience retention.
When your videos have high audience retention, YouTube might show them more in search results and suggestions. This is because these videos grab and keep people’s attention effectively.
Playback locations report
Playback Locations in YouTube analytics refer to monitoring the different places where people watch your videos. They might watch on YouTube, on another website, or on the YouTube mobile app. This helps you know where your audience is and how they watch your videos.
Knowing Playback Locations is helpful for video makers. If many people watch your videos on other websites, it means your content is shared a lot. You might then want to make more content that people like to share. But if most views are on YouTube directly, it means people find your videos through YouTube’s search or recommendations.
Step 1: Go to the ‘Analytics’ option on this panel. Inside the Analytics section, you’ll see a tab called ‘Advanced Mode’ at the top. Click on this tab.
Step 2: In the Advanced Mode, there’s a section called ‘More’. Within that section, you can access the ‘Playback Locations’ report. This report gives you information about where people are watching your videos.
Traffic sources report
External referrals, such as social media or websites that share your videos, and YouTube referrals from search, recommended videos, and the homepage are where your video traffic comes from.
To discover your traffic sources on YouTube Studio:
Step 1: Go to Analytics, Click on Audience and Select Subscribers then click on See More.
Step 2: Check Traffic Source for insights on how viewers discover your video.
